ARENA RESOURCES TOPS FORTUNE'S 100 FASTEST-GROWING COMPANIES LIST
NEW YORK, NY [September 22, 2008] — FORTUNE announced today its 18th annual list of America's Fastest-Growing Companies. Topping the ranking is Arena Resources of Tulsa, OK, an eight-year old oil and gas producer which has grown by buying properties in New Mexico and Texas and who saw a 117% revenue growth (three-year annual rate). FORTUNE's 100 Fastest-Growing list and related stories appear in the September 29 issue of FORTUNE, available on newsstands and at www.FORTUNE.com today. Rounding out the top ten are: T-3 Energy Services, Houston, TX (No. 2), an oilfield equipment maker which fills orders from the Middle East to Russia; Allis-Chalmers Energy, Houston (No. 3), an oil and gas services firm which has been on an acquisition binge over the past six years; Bucyrus International, South Milwaukee, WI (No. 4), which specializes in equipment for mining coal and copper; DXP Enterprises, Houston (No. 5), a 100-year-old company that supplies pumps and more to industries including oil and gas; National Oilwell Varco, Houston (No. 6), an oil and gas services outfit which makes products under 115 brand names; Sigma Designs, Milpitas, CA (No. 7), which makes chips that power new media toys like Blu-ray DVD players and high-definition TVs; Atwood Oceanics, Houston (No. 8), an offshore driller which has eight rigs which sit in waters all over the world; Intuitive Surgical, Sunnyvale, CA (No. 9), which makes and services surgical robots that allow for less invasive procedures; and Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Phoenix, AZ (No. 10), the world's largest publicly traded copper producer who has soared with commodities prices. Last Year's list-topper, Nutrisystem, fell to the No. 20 spot on this year's list due to its stock price falling 25% from weak consumer spending. Newcomers to the list include: T-3 Energy Services (No. 2), Bucyrus International (No. 4), DXP Enterprises (No. 5), and Sigma Designs (No. 7). The largest group of the 100 fast-growers is energy companies, taking up a quarter of the list with 25 companies. Technology companies follow with 15 spots, then financial services and industrial companies, with 12 and 11 spots respectively. "The long-running energy and commodities boom has led to a curious wrinkle this year: No fewer than five of the top ten fast-growers are reinvented industrials with hundred-year histories that stretch back into America's iron age," said senior list editor Michael Cacace and his editorial team in the introduction to the list. These companies are led by No. 3 Allis-Chalmers, an energy company that began as a foundry in the 19th century and was later famous for its tractors. Also in the centenarian's club: Bucyrus International, DXP Enterprises, National Oilwell Varco, and Freeport McMoRan. "Next year's top 10 may have a very different look — so enjoy this blast from the past while it lasts." FORTUNE's Fastest Growing editorial package also includes Jon Birger's "Six Stocks to Buy Now," which highlights the six stocks from the 100 Fastest Growing list that FORTUNE considers strong bets to keep the pedal to the metal and further reward their already-grateful shareholders. Among the six is the Fastest Growing list-topper Arena Resources, with a stock price of $40. To compile the list, FORTUNE ranks companies based on three years of revenue and profit growth and total return, using data provided by Zacks Investment Research.
